
Definitions
- Compressed Work Week: A standard work week in which an employee works longer hours per day in order to have time off during another normal work day.
- Expanded Work Hours: The number of hours per day paid or scheduled for an employee with a compressed work week (i.e., 10 hours paid or 10.5 scheduled)
- Normal Hours: Hours of operation within a department/area.
- Normal Workday: The number of hours per day paid or scheduled for an employee working the normal hours of a department/area (i.e., 8 hours paid or 8.5 hours scheduled)
- Paid Hours: The number of hours a non-exempt employee is paid for his or her work (e.g. 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, etc.). Exempt employees are paid an annual salary for all hours worked, without restriction.
- Scheduled Hours: For non-exempt employees, scheduled hours are paid hours plus New York State mandated meal break time, typically 30 minutes per day. In the case of an employee paid for 8 hours of work per day (40 hours per week), the mandated meal break time is 30 minutes, for a total of 8.5 hours scheduled (42.5 hours per week). For exempt employees, scheduled hours are the hours of work per day that are expected, plus New York State mandated meal break time.
- Standard Work Week: Actual named days worked within a week by an employee or department (e.g., Monday to Friday, Tuesday to Thursday, etc.)
- Standard Hours Per Week (PeopleSoft term): Number of hours per week assigned to a position (e.g., 37.5 hours, 40 hours)
- Telecommuting: An employee works one or more days from home and is available during normal work hours on those days.
