LiveWell combines movements of yoga, tai chi, pilates and ballet to provide an exercise program that utilizes your own body's weight and flowing motions. LiveWell is an alternative to traditional exercise programs as it exercises joints gently and aids memory. This session will demonstrate sequences that can be done at work and that are appropriate for all fitness levels.

Join Carol Babiracki, associate professor of Fine Arts, and members of Shen Wei Dance Arts for a presentation on Shen Wei and SU's Shared First-Year Experience. Shen Wei Dance Arts is a world-renowned dance company that performs under the direction of Shen Wei, acclaimed choreographer of the 2008 Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremonies.

Detecting Breast Cancer Early

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the United States. Join Dr. Stephen Montgomery, director of the Crouse Breast Care Center, at this session as he discusses the importance of mammography and other screening techniques to detect breast cancer at an early stage.

Relaxation through meditation is a comfortable approach to relieving "mind clutter" and toxic words. This session will focus on breathing and progressive relaxation techniques to clear your mind. Learn how a combination of meditation breathing techniques and your unique set of "wonder words" can provide daily renewal and a positive outlook in times of stress and uncertainty.

Dependent Tuition Benefit Overview
Tuesday, October 6
500 Hall of Languages SU offers three dependent tuition options leading to the first bachelor's degree for eligible dependents of eligible employees. If you are an eligible employee new to the application process, please join representatives from Human Resources and Financial Aid as they answer your questions on the dependent tuition benefit options and how to apply for them. A short presentation on using dependent tuition benefits for Main Campus, University College, Cash Grant and Tuition Exchange will be offered followed by a question and answer time for participants. If you are planning to attend, please review HR's Dependent Tuition Benefit website prior to the session.

Syracuse University Cartographic Laboratory

SU Cartographic Laboratory, Holden Observatory Join us for an introduction to the Syracuse University Cartographic Laboratory, housed in the historical Holden Observatory. Learn how the Lab provides the University community with maps and graphics, as well as advice and assistance for the professional, educational, and technical aspects of cartography. Session limited to 15 participants.

Intermissions Gallery Talk

Light Work/Community Darkrooms, Robert B. Menschel Media Center, Watson Hall
Hannah Frieser, director of Light Work, will give a talk and campus tour of some of the locations that house the current exhibition project, Intermissions, featuring the video art and photographs of Kansas City artist Barry Anderson. The tour will begin with a talk at the Light Work main gallery. Participants will then walk to see: the window installation in Panasci Lounge at Schine Student Center; photographs at the Robert B. Menschel Photography Gallery; and, if time permits, Anderson's video at SUArt Galleries. For more information on this large-scale exhibition, visit the Light Work website.

Recycling in Onondaga County
Thursday, October 15

Join Sarah Stewart from the Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency (OCRRA), along with Ann-Catherine Browne and Melissa Cadwell from the SU Sustainability Division, for a brief overview of the recycling rules in Onondaga County. She will discuss what materials can go in a blue bin, what goes in the trash, and what needs special disposal. Participants will learn about what happens to trash and recyclables after going to the curb, the many different programs OCRRA has to offer, electronic recycling, battery disposal, and hazardous waste drop-off. Sarah will also discuss how the SU recycling program operates.

Word 2007 - The Basics

Learn the basics of working in Word 2007 at this session. Attendees will explore Word 2007 features such as the "Ribbon" (formerly known as the toolbar), using the status bar, and creating and saving documents. You'll also be introduced to Microsoft's online Interactive Guide, a tool that allows you to rest the mouse pointer over a Word 2003 menu or button to learn its new location in Word 2007.

Word 2007 - Working with Tables and Mail Merge
Wednesday, November 4

Tables are a great way to keep a Word document organized. Attend this session to learn how to insert a table into a document, work with the "Table Tools" tab on the "Ribbon" to manipulate it, insert rows and columns, repeat headers, manipulate text alignment, and convert existing text to a table. Following the demonstration on tables you will learn about mail merge, a tool used to create a form letter which you intend to print or e-mail multiple times, sending each copy to a different person.

This program, presented by the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Central New York, will provide participants with a strategy of how to attempt to enjoy the holiday season without taking on financial debt. You will learn about "Holiday Hang-ups" that sabotage your budget and how some great money savings ideas can take the financial pain out of the holiday.

Transitioning from active employee to retiree can be overwhelming unless you've planned for the impending financial, personal and lifestyle changes of retirement. Join Dana Godbold, HR's retirement and leave of absence specialist, as she addresses many aspects of retirement including: retiree medical, Medicare, retiree life insurance, social security, continued affiliations with the University and financial contact information.

Join Chris Danek, assistant director of academic facilities, Office of Campus Planning, Design and Construction, as he presents an informational overview of the architectural heritage of Syracuse University. He will review how the campus has evolved in response to the many academic and environmental changes throughout its history and will explore building features most people don't see.

Would you like to step into a tropical forest during your lunch hour and forget the chill of winter? Join Terry L. Ettinger, greenhouse manager, for a short presentation and tour of the ESF Greenhouses. The greenhouses are open to the public, Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Session limited to 12 participants.

Traditional Black-and-White Printing
Thursday, November 19
Light Work/Community Darkrooms, Robert B. Menschel Media Center, Watson Hall
Join Vernon Burnett, Light Work/Community Darkrooms customer service manager, to learn the art of printing traditional black-and-white photographs at Community Darkrooms. This workshop will offer a demonstration of how to use the black-and-white darkroom, followed by an opportunity for participants to print their own images. Attendees may bring their own black-and-white negatives to print, or sample negatives will be provided by Community Darkrooms for practice. Session limited to 10 participants.

International SOS Travel Assistance

The University has contracted with International SOS (ISOS) to provide worldwide travel, medical and security assistance and evacuation services for faculty, staff, and students traveling outside the United States on or for University business, and sanctioned academic work or research. ISOS services better enhance safety and help to facilitate communication in the event of emergency situations. Attend this informational session to learn more about the services provided by ISOS.

Chiropractic Care - Knowing What Works and What Doesn't

We all have the potential to be healthy, but for some there is a tendency to get worn down, injured or end up in poor health for other reasons. Chiropractic care, along with some very minor lifestyle changes, may rejuvenate you and allow you to feel better and enjoy a healthy life. Join Dr. Donna Coty, D.C., from LaFayette Chiropractic Center as she explains what chiropractic care involves and discusses the various methods of treatment.
