Disability Mentoring Day is an international event held on the third Wednesday of October, which is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This program started as National Disability Mentoring Day in 1999 in the White House, as a program to increase the profile of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
The annual Syracuse area Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) will be held on October 21, 2009. Syracuse University is proud to support this important event that allows local students and job seekers with disabilities ("mentees") to expand their horizons, solidify career goals and gain a practical perspective of a workplace.
SU has participated in DMD for 8 years, and in 2008, 13 SU departments hosted 30 mentees on DMD. DMD begins with a kick off program, sponsored by SU, that includes a breakfast at which mentors and mentees have the opportunity to get to know each other before they spend the rest of the morning together in the mentor's workplace. Syracuse mayor Matt Driscoll and Onondaga county executive Joanie Mahoney both speak at the event.
Specific questions about Syracuse University's role with the local DMD should be directed to Christina Percoski, Human Resources employment specialist, at x4690 or crpercos@syr.edu. Further information about the local program, including FAQs, is also available online.
