Plan Feature: Opt Out/Opt In
Opt Out/Opt In is the ability to waive out of the Syracuse University retiree health plans with the option to opt back in at a later date under specified circumstances. This gives you the flexibility to consider other options that may better suit your needs.
Opt Out/Opt In Summary:
- A Member (either retiree or dependent) can opt out of our retiree health plan and preserve future eligibility (at the same percentage University subsidy as at retirement) if the appropriate conditions are satisfied.
- After exercising the opt out, a Member can opt back in and reinstate his or her retiree health coverage under either of the following two conditions:
- (1) If the Member is not enrolled in Medicare but can show proof of continuous creditable coverage over the entire opt out period, the Member may opt in to the retiree health plan. Under this option, there is no limit on the number of times that a Member can opt in or opt out.
(2) If the Member is enrolled in Medicare, the Member may opt back in without any proof. This option may be used only once.

As is the case with all of its employee benefit plans, the University reserves the right to modify or terminate the Retiree Medical Plan and/or the Retiree Prescription Drug Plan (including the terms of those Plans described in this summary) from time to time. You only will be eligible for the coverages described in this summary if the Retiree Medical Plan and the Retiree Prescription Drug Plan are satisfied, and the terms of the those Plans will control if there are any inconsistencies with this summary.
