Nursing Mothers in the Workplace
The amount of time needed to express is generally 20 minutes, two or three times a day. The time can be taken during break periods or whenever necessary. As a general rule, private spaces should be in close proximity to the mother's work space. Some examples of private spaces are lunchrooms during off-hours; an office with a door that can be used when vacant; a storage space or a restroom large enough to accommodate a chair. The law does not require an employer to provide a space if doing so would impose an undue hardship. Undue hardship is defined as requiring significant difficulty or expense (new construction, etc.).
