Protocols for Hiring Temporary Employees
(Including Summer and Student Employees)

Approval of Temporary Hires (Including Summer and Student Employees) in all Non-Academic Administrative and Support Areas
- Area head in each Cabinet area (direct report) to approve requests in writing, with the exception, if applicable, that temporary hires of students for research or teaching duties funded by research or other discretionary funds do not require approval by the area head.
- Temporary hiring in the SEIU bargaining unit areas must also comply with contractual obligations to first consider bargaining unit employees on seasonal layoff (Food Services employees are the only SEIU employees subject to seasonal layoffs).
- Area head to provide to their Cabinet member a summary report of all temporary hires since May 1, 2009 (including summer), to include 1) justifications for the hiring need and 2) documentation of hires of employee's spouse/children, which will be sent to the Executive Vice President/Chief Financial Officer and Vice Chancellor/Provost by no later than September 15, 2009.

- Area head to provide a summary report of all temporary hires since May 1, 2009 (including summer), to include 1) justifications for the hiring need and 2) documentation of hires of employee's spouse/children, to the Executive Vice President/Chief Financial Officer and Vice Chancellor/Provost no later than September 15, 2009.
