Complaint Process: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who can use this process?

A: Non-faculty, non-bargaining unit, regular staff employees may use this process. Temporary employees or persons with recourse to another University complaint process (i.e., students, faculty, bargaining unit employees) may not use this process.

Q: Can performance reviews and salary be appealed through this process?

A: No. There are other resources for handling questions about performance reviews and salary issues. Please contact the director of diversity and resolution processes x1520 or the assistant director for employment practices and EEO x5464 to address issues about performance reviews or the compensation manager x5370 to address salary issues.

Q: What if my boss retaliates against me for filing a complaint or for being a staff volunteer?

A: At the conclusion of each hearing the parties are informed that there is to be no retaliation. In addition this process allows you to file a Complaint in the event you feel you are being retaliated against for utilizing this process in any manner.

Q: Do I have to use the informal process before I can use the formal part of the process?

A: All matters in this process, except terminations, must go through the informal part of the process first.

Q: What is an advocate?

A: An advocate assists the Complainant throughout the process. Examples of assistance offered are: helping to understand the process, completing the form and providing emotional support.

Q: What is a mediator?

A: A mediator works to bring the Complainant and Respondent to resolution of the complaint. The mediator clarifies points that have been made, looks for common ground, and proposes conflict resolution options.

Q: What is the role of the panelist?

A: The role of the panelist is to interview the parties and witnesses and make an objective determination based on the information they receive.
