A Look at Human Resources

Neil Strodel You may visit the HR page once a year for Open Enrollment or you may stop by every day to print a form or check on an upcoming event. No matter how you use HR, the team is hard at work to serve you better whenever you need any of the services we provide. This portion of our website shows you a side of HR that is more than benefits or job opportunities. Take a look at how HR is evolving, how our past practices have merited award recognition, and how our team is connecting to the Syracuse community.

I've mapped some goals for the 2007-2008 fiscal year. Here's what's at the top of my list for this year:

  1. Scholarship in Action: Recognize and encourage excellence in the workplace in support of Scholarship in Action.

  2. New medical plans: Explore the possibility of adding additional choices to the medical plan benefit.

  3. Employee Handbook: Update the Staff Employee Handbook and move from a hard copy to a web-based version.

  4. Respectful Workplace & Dialogue Circles: Continue development and presentations of the Respectful Workplace sessions and launch a Dialogue Circle in Spring 2008.

  5. Compensation: Continue work on faculty pay reporting (in conjunction with Academic Affairs) and initiate a staff compensation study supported by a consultant.

  6. Workplace Partnership Council (WPC): Continue work with the SEIU WPC with special consideration to the 2010 negotiations and employee engagement.

  7. Coordinated Staff Relations Strategy: Support the staff relations and recruitment team as they work with, and secure contracts for, all campus unions.

  8. Introduce Mickey Lord (newly hired WorkLife and Organizational Development Director): Key drivers in her first year include: performance partnership, exemplary achievement, Syracuse University Employees Engaging Community (SUEEC) and the family care assessment.

  9. PeopleSoft 9.0: Prepare campus users for the upgrade.

  10. Wellness: Expand wellness initiatives around a healthy campus and toward the goal of driving down health care costs.
