Retirement Planning

Effective planning for your retirement is an important step in ensuring a secure financial future. Syracuse University and TIAA-CREF (Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association-College Retirement Equities Fund) are your partners in building a better financial future.

Upon reaching your one-year anniversary, you will begin receiving a University contribution of 11% of your base salary toward your retirement, subject to University policy and the TIAA-CREF plan. If you are coming from another four-year institution, you may be eligible to waive your one-year waiting period. The waiver form and directions are available below.

For employees who wish to actively manage their investments there are expanded options to select from. Employees who do not wish to actively manage their investments can participate in Lifecyle Funds, which are investments designed with a target retirement date in mind.

You may also begin contributing to your own retirement through the TIAA-CREF Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Account (SRA). Your contributions can begin at any time and deductions are taken out of your paycheck on a pre-tax basis, thus, saving you even more money. Forms are available below. To find out what your maximum contribution is, please contact our Retirement Specialist at (315) 443-5367.

Please visit one of the Human Resources offices to obtain a comprehensive packet of information on TIAA-CREF and to complete any necessary forms. You may also contact TIAA-CREF at the website below or by calling 1-800-842-2776. Syracuse University employees who wish to schedule a one-on-one appointment with a TIAA-CREF advisor should call 477-9000 or 1-866-698-4221 for meetings on campus at 210 Steele Hall, or at the local TIAA-CREF office at 250 South Clinton Street, Suite 310 in Syracuse.
